HENRY SCHEIN || THE 2025 INTERACTIVE PLAYBOOK TO BUILDING YOUR DENTAL PRACTICE
10. BUILD YOUR TEAM
Internal Team
DOCTOR + Henry Schein Representative
External Team
Having the right internal and external skill sets from the start will serve you well in building a highly efficient and scalable practice. Your internal team may consist of associate dentists (once you have the patient volume to support this), dental hygienists, dental assistants, an office manager and a treatment coordinator. If you inherit some of these team members from the purchase of a practice, make sure that you are clear on your processes, your vision and your goals and that they are aligned with these goals. Take the time to train them on how you want the practice to run, as this might be different than how they are used to doing things.
Consult with your Henry Schein equipment specialist to build your external team of consultants, including certified public accountants (CPAs), insurance brokers, business consultants, attorneys, financial advisers and real estate advisers, who've helped other dental practices achieve their goals. Get this team working together early on to understand your goals and strategies. From there, they can help you set up the right legal and insurance protections, standard operating practices, lease and purchase agreements and more.
GETTING STARTED
Perform due diligence, including checking references and conducting background checks on anyone you hire (whether they’re a team member or a consultant) to protect yourself, your existing team members and your patients.
You may also want to consider using personality assessment tools like the Kolbe A™ Index, DiSC® or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® to help you identify the strengths and weaknesses of your team members and where each one should fit within the practice to best set themselves — and you — up for success.
If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to building your team, your Henry Schein equipment specialist is the ultimate conduit to guidance on this topic. They have extensive experience with vetting and putting together teams to help dentists start and scale their practices.
